Gloria Steinem

Email – August 2009

Dearest Marta,

I'm back from my sojourn at the women's writing retreat, peacefully (or not) going through my mail -- and suddenly I came upon your and Tatjana's note about the Women's Building Mural.

It brought tears to my eyes.....  I've always loved that building and the welcoming women's faces on it, a refuge and an inspiration in the midst of city buildings and for that matter, a whole world that so rarely belongs to us.

Even more than other early feminist art events like Judy Chicago's Woman House, which also blew my mind (until then, I didn't know we, too, had symbols), the colorful welcoming embrace of that building made me understand what could be.

I never once imagined being on it -- not until I read what you sent.  I don't think this would have happened were you not there with your generous heart. I hope you know how very much it means -- and all the more so as my age advances and surprises me.

I thank you so much -- and please thank Kerry, too.

                  with love and gratitude,

                          Gloria

Honored by Marta Drury and Kerry Lobel
