The Women's Building


The Women’s Building (TWB) is a multi-service community center whose mission is to provide women and girls with the tools and resources they need to achieve full and equal participation in society.


The Women’s Building began 1970 when a group of visionary women founded San Francisco Women’s Centers (SFWC) to incubate emerging Bay Area women’s projects. In 1979, SFWC purchased The Women’s Building, creating the first women-owned community center in the country.


Our name, plus our colorful, four-story mural featuring the contributions of women throughout history, makes it clear that we are dedicated to the well-being of women and girls. Inside the building, we and our tenant groups offer a wide range of programs. These services focus especially on women and girls that are low-income, women of color, recent immigrants and members of the lesbian/gay/ bisexual/transgender (LGBT) community.


Our activities fall in three main categories:


• Services and programs to empower women and girls to become self-sufficient. Thousands of women and girls use our social services, attend our arts activities and learn about and discuss issues at our political/social issues briefings.

• A home to other nonprofits serving women and girls.
Presently, we share our building with ten other nonprofits.

• A community center that facilitates and promotes education, advocacy and action. Community groups and individuals use our classrooms, auditorium and meetings rooms for activities such as political organizing meetings, celebrations and arts performances.

Though many things are better for women and girls, much still needs to be done. We, and others, continue to work for a society that fosters women’s and girls’ safety, economic stability, good health, and their mental, physical and creative talents, so that they will lead lives full of choices that promote their well-being, as well as that of their families.
