There Is Always a Way Forward

My name is Dunia Torres. I am Honduran, and this is my story.
I first came to The Women’s Building three years ago, on the recommendation of another woman who had received support here. At the time, I was going through one of the most difficult moments in my life. I had lost my job during the pandemic, I was pregnant, and I didn’t know where to begin. But that recommendation gave me the strength to walk through the doors for the first time.
Since then, this place has become an anchor in my life.
Here, I’ve been treated with dignity and patience. Every time I walk in, I feel like there is space for me. I’ve received support in looking for work, creating my resume, and navigating the process of finding housing.
One of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had was taking part in an embroidery workshop. It was so much more than learning a skill. It was a healing moment—a chance to connect with other women and feel accompanied. I love sharing these kinds of activities with friends and neighbors because I believe it’s important for more women to know about this place. These are the kinds of moments that stay with you in your heart.
I’m also currently studying at City College. And even though there are days when it feels like there just aren’t enough hours, I keep going. I want to grow, move forward, and build something better for my daughter.
For me, the name “The Women’s Building” says it all. This place truly understands the unique experiences we live as women—especially when we are starting over and have fought hard to get where we are. Here, those experiences aren’t treated as weaknesses. They are honored as part of who we are.
I’ve never been in a place that offers services so thoughtfully designed for me—for what I need as a woman, as a mother, as a migrant. Here, I find kindness, respect, and most of all, I leave with a lighter heart and a clearer mind.
If I could say something to others who are considering coming, it would be this: don’t hesitate. This is a place where people truly listen to you, walk alongside you, and connect you to resources. You are not alone here. There is a community waiting for you. And if you haven’t visited yet, I invite you to come and get to know The Women’s Building—there is so much here for you too.
There is always something that brings back hope.
I want to close this testimony with a message to my daughter:Yes, it’s possible. Even with fear, there is hope.
