An Idea Born in 1971
That idea began in 1971, when a diverse group of Bay Area feminists came together to create something radical for its time: a shared space where women could organize, build power, exchange knowledge, and support one another across differences.
Born during a period of social movements that reshaped the United States, The Women's Building emerged alongside struggles for civil rights, racial justice, peace, labor rights, and gender equality. Rather than competing for resources or recognition, our founders imagined a collective home where many organizations and communities could thrive together.
Today, that vision continues.
Our tours explore the history of the feminist movement in San Francisco, the origins of The Women's Building, the stories behind the Maestrapeace mural, and the generations of activists, artists, educators, immigrants, and community leaders who have shaped this space.
